Ingredients Overview
Basic Soap Ingredients
- Oils and Butters: mostly converted to soap, with a little extra remaining to be gentler on skin
- Lye (Sodium Hydroxide): Added to convert the oils and butters into soap. No lye remains in the finished bar of soap. Learn more here.
- Water: Lye must be dissolved in a water-based liquid to safely make soap. Goat milk, aloe vera juice, and other beverages are popular substitutes.
Optional Soap Ingredients
- Fragrance: Essential oils and/or fragrance oils, added for scent at skin-safe levels. All scents are phthalate-free and parabens-free.
- Color: Skin-safe colorants, natural or lab created, that are ethically sourced, cruelty-free, and 3rd party tested for purity and safety.
- Sodium Lactate: A humectant that helps make soap bars harder and longer-lasting. It is the sodium salt of lactic acid, derived from the fermentation of sugars in corn and beets. Table salt can also be added to make harder bars.
- Sugar: Sugar strengthens soap bubbles and stabilizes lather. Milks, juices, purees, and honey are popular sources of natural sugars for soapmaking.
- Clays: Clays can act as natural colorants, scent anchors, and lather enhancers.
How to Use
- Wet your hands and rub the soap bar between them to create a lather.
- Rub the lather on your skin using circular motions.
- When handwashing, scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds.
- Avoid sensitive areas, such as eyes and mouth.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water, then pat dry with a clean towel or air dry.
